Summary statement

Across 38 seed plants, we show that angiosperm NLR immune repertoires descend from a few deep ancestral lineages whose breadth shaped their fate: CNLs repeatedly expanded and diverged in expression, whereas TNLs and RNLs were prone to loss, and the NLR fold remained structurally conserved.
