Racial time, crime and justice in Cardiff, 1870–1939

Lizzie Seal

This article examines how the racialisation of time can be incorporated into historical criminology and argues historical criminologists must analyse how individuals from different social groups experienced different temporalities. It presents illustrative findings from a project on race, crime and justice in Cardiff, 1870–1939 about racialised people’s everyday experiences of criminalisation and victimisation. The article shows how racial time shaped these experiences via discussion of five topics: larceny, labour, morality, immigration restriction and racist violence.
