Quantification for surface aerator systems
Giacomo Bellandi, Shuting Wang, Mikkel Holmen Andersen, Haoran Duan, Carlos Domingo-FelezSummary
Quantification of gaseous nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from surface aerator systems is challenging due to the high turbulence around the aerator, which does not allow the use of common gas hoods (chapter 2). Total gaseous emissions can be approximated via liquid N2O concentration measurements and averaged stripping rates for the surface aerator based on alternative measurements such as power input or dissolved oxygen. Chapter 6 provides the theoretical basis of mixing and stripping, and two methods to calculate gaseous N2O emissions from liquid measurements with ready-to-use spreadsheets (see Resources). Additionally, examples and recommendations for monitoring campaigns are presented.
