Vaishnavi G Kulkarni, Aashish Patel, Varsha G Kulkarni
Background:
The
Samprayogika Adhikarana
of the
Kama Sutra
presents a detailed and systematic exposition of sexual union, integrating physical, psychological, and relational dimensions of intimacy. In contrast, contemporary sexual norms are increasingly shaped by media-driven and performance-oriented narratives that often neglect emotional connection and mutual responsiveness.
Objective:
This study aims to reinterpret the concepts described in the
Samprayogika Adhikarana
through the lens of contemporary psychosexual perspectives, highlighting their relevance to modern models of sexual health and relational well-being.
Methods:
An interdisciplinary narrative review was conducted, combining classical textual analysis with contemporary psychosexual literature. The primary text was thematically analyzed and interpreted through contemporary psychosexual frameworks using a biopsychosocial model. Secondary sources included research on sexual response, intimacy, and relational dynamics.
Results and Discussion:
The analysis reveals that the
Samprayogika Adhikarana
conceptualizes sexual interaction as a dynamic and multi-stage process involving compatibility, sensory engagement, emotional attunement, and contextual sensitivity. Key themes include anatomical compatibility, graded arousal, progressive sensory engagement, and relational interaction. These themes demonstrate conceptual parallels with contemporary psychosexual frameworks emphasizing communication, mutual responsiveness, and emotional attunement. The text also discusses themes related to role flexibility, sexual diversity, and temporal structuring of intimacy, which share phenomenological similarities with contemporary psychosexual frameworks such as mindfulness-based sex therapy and communication-centered models of intimacy.
Conclusion:
The
Samprayogika Adhikarana
offers a holistic and integrative model of sexuality that resonates with modern biopsychosocial perspectives. Its emphasis on mutual satisfaction, adaptability, sensory modulation, and relational continuity underscores its continued relevance in contemporary discussions of sexual health and well-being.
