Prosocial Outcomes of Gaming

Richard Lamb

Summary

Video games have become an integral part of contemporary culture and entertainment, and despite receiving criticism for potential negative effects, research shows that they can also have positive prosocial benefits for individuals and society. Prosocial behavior encompasses a wide range of actions aimed at benefiting others or society as a whole, including kindness, cooperation, altruism, and social activism. At the heart of prosociality lies prosocial behavior, driven by affective characteristics such as empathy, compassion, and a sense of responsibility toward others. Video games have been found to cultivate these qualities in players by providing opportunities for virtual cooperation and encouraging the consideration of others’ perspectives and emotions. They motivate players to take positive actions within the game world and potentially extend those behaviors beyond the virtual realm. Recognizing the prosocial potential of video games has important implications for educators, psychologists, and social scientists. By understanding the factors associated with prosocial behaviors, game designers can create experiences that promote cooperation, empathy, and positive behavior. Video games can also be utilized as educational tools to enhance social and emotional learning in educational settings. Furthermore, future research can delve deeper into the mechanisms behind these prosocial effects and explore ways to maximize their impact.
