Few studies have characterized the proportion of time a child spends with nasopharyngeal pneumococcal colonization, thus at risk for pneumococcal disease. In this prospective study conducted in the early 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine implementation period, young Peruvian children exhibited pneumococcal colonization during half of the observed person-time. Specific serotypes exhibited variable colonization duration, ranging from 17.5 to 100.3 days.
