Prompt Engineering for Academics: Real-world Application
Ekta Sinha, Shalini Chandra, Charles David WaghmareThis chapter examines how prompt engineering can be meaningfully integrated into core academic practices, including research design, literature review, assessment, and lecture preparation. Rather than presenting artificial intelligence (AI) as a tool for automation, the chapter frames it as a mechanism for augmenting intellectual processes such as idea generation, synthesis, critique, and pedagogical design. Through detailed examples, it demonstrates how carefully constructed prompts can support the formulation of research questions, the structuring of literature reviews, and the development of aligned and authentic assessments. A key contribution of the chapter lies in shifting the focus from output generation to process enhancement – highlighting how iterative prompting enables exploration, refinement, and critical engagement. At the same time, the chapter addresses important risks, including over-reliance on AI-generated content and lack of originality. It emphasises the continued centrality of academic judgement in evaluating, contextualising, and validating AI output.
Chapter Goal: Prep work for research, assessment design, and exams using prompt engineering.
