Promotional Strategies in Self-Development Book Blurbs: A Move and Appraisal Analysis
Hmoud AlotaibiThis study investigates the promotional strategies of Arabic self-development book blurbs by analyzing their move structures and evaluative language within the Appraisal framework. Drawing on 100 texts, the study shows three prevalent moves: Description, Evaluation, and About the Author. The study also examines how attitude resources (affect, judgment, and appreciation) are deployed and linguistically realized across these moves. The findings reveal a clear relationship between move rhetorical functions and evaluative resources. For example, affect and appreciation resources are used most often in the descriptive and evaluative moves, where they shape readers’ concerns and emphasize the book’s value and benefits. Yet, Judgment (especially through capacity resources) is more frequent in the author-information move, where it builds the author’s expertise and professional credibility. More importantly, the findings reveal a recurring step in the descriptive move that addresses common human challenges, which may indicate that persuasion starts with outlining problem framing rather than confined to promotional aspects. By uncovering how move structure and evaluative resources integrate to engage readers, this study contributes to research on promotional discourse.
