Projecting Strength Beyond Arms: Media Nationalism and News Framing of the U.S.–China Trade War 2.0

Michael Ofori, Fredrick Daoyenikye, Sandra Freda Wood

We examined how press systems and indexing explain the news narrative of the reignited U.S.–China trade war. Quantitative content analysis of news stories ( N  = 320) from four national perspective news outlets from the United States and China revealed that news framing of the U.S.–China trade war aligned with the U.S. libertarian press culture while partly reinforcing China’s authoritarian media culture, driven by differences in source diversity and national interest priorities across both countries’ news narratives.
