“Private” Lessons in HM327: On Becoming a Reflexive Educator

En-Shu Robin Liao

Abstract

In this book chapter, the author shares particular “stories” and “tales” (Van Maanen, 1988) that took place in Dr Janet L. Miller’s office, Horace Mann 327. It was the “classroom” where the author received countless “private” lessons from her beloved professor. Those “reflexivity” moments (Miller, 2005, p. 238) and intersubjective “experiences” (Scott, 1991) became this telling that can no longer be separated from her multiple “selves” (Davies, 2000). They showed the author the possibility and need to live with the incoherence and contradictions “that simultaneously come with the process of coming into being” (Miller, 2005, p. 229) as a professor, a scholar, a researcher, a woman of minority, and many more.
