Prioritizing the critical enablers of Quality 4.0 implementation in automotive manufacturing industry: implications for industrial managers and policy-makers

This study aims to explore and prioritize the critical enablers (CEs) for the successful deployment of Quality 4.0 (Q4.0) in automotive manufacturing industry.
Design/methodology/approach
Initially, comprehensive literature review related to Q4.0 adoption in manufacturing industry and automotive sector was conducted for exploring the CEs. Further, the semi-structured questionnaires were designed and modified by incorporating the variables that align with the Indian automotive manufacturing industries. The finalized CEs were further prioritized using fuzzy DEMATEL approach with the help of case study. Moreover, the obtained results are validated using the sensitivity analysis.
Findings
The obtained results indicate that an innovation-oriented culture of Q4.0 adoption. “Top management commitment and effective leadership”, “Smart communication among machine” and “data analytics of quality” emerged as the influential enablers.
Practical implications
The dynamic market trends and zero-defect product requirement enforce the automotive industries to integrate their processes with Q4.0 approach. This study provides practical insights for managers and industry practitioners by illustrating how Q4.0 can support automotive production systems and by highlighting the critical enablers that require focused attention for effective integration into existing quality management practices.
Originality/value
This study is the original contributions in terms of exploring the critical enablers of Q4.0 implementation significantly in automotive manufacturing industry, followed by prioritization of enablers using fuzzy DEMATEL and sensitivity analysis.
