Precarity among Chinese and Korean international students in the United States: Examining financial and visa status insecurity

Sujung Lee

This study examines how financial insecurity and visa insecurity intersect to shape the educational experiences of Chinese and Korean international students in the United States. Particular attention is given to the study-to-employment transition as a period in which these intersecting insecurities become especially visible. Findings reveal that while some students navigate varied strategies to manage these uncertainties, others encounter significant difficulties due to inadequate institutional support. This study raises critical questions about how international students perceive and navigate precarities stemming from financial and visa-related insecurities, as well as the role of educational institutions in addressing these issues and fostering an equitable environment for a diverse international student body.
