Politics
Laura TunbridgeAbstract
Musicians have always traveled extensively, and the chamber-music repertoire reflects experiences from around the world. Works representing other cultures demonstrate the impact of politics on musicians’ lives through history. Experiences of war and political regime change have determined the migration pattern of musicians. Engagement with the European chamber-music tradition by composers from other continents has allowed for new combinations of instruments and practices that convey shifting political allegiances and attitudes. Ensembles dedicated to bringing musicians from different traditions together have also raised significant political debate about cultural exchange and power relations within the music industry.
