Podophyllin-associated toxic keratopathy and uveitis: A case series
Aishwarya Karunanithi, MounikaReddy Puthalapattu, Dhaanyashri TheiveeganPodophyllin is a widely used cytotoxic agent for treating anogenital and skin warts, but its potential for severe ocular toxicity upon accidental exposure remains underreported. Understanding the clinical presentation and management of podophyllin-induced toxic oculopathy is crucial for preventing long-term ocular complications. This case series presents three instances of podophyllin-induced ocular toxicity, each demonstrating varying degrees of corneal, conjunctival, and uveal involvement. The severity of ocular injury is influenced by the concentration of exposure, duration, and time to decontamination. Immediate and aggressive management is essential to mitigate the risk of permanent visual impairment. This case series highlights the need for increased awareness among healthcare providers and patients regarding the potential ocular hazards of podophyllin. Safe handling practices, patient education, and early recognition of toxicity can significantly reduce the incidence of severe ocular morbidity.
