Pneumatosis Intestinalis in Adults: An Increasingly Emerging Threat

Abstract

Pneumatosis intestinalis (PI) is a rare condition characterized by gas-filled cysts within the gastrointestinal tract, with presentations ranging from benign to life-threatening. We report a 23-year-old male presenting with abdominal distension and constipation. Imaging revealed pneumoperitoneum; however, clinical stability suggested a benign etiology. The patient was managed conservatively with a favorable outcome, highlighting that not all pneumoperitoneum mandates surgical intervention and emphasizing the importance of clinical correlation.
