Planetary 'Singaporeanization': Geopolitics within planetary rural/urban geographies

James D. Sidaway, Dariusz Wójcik

This commentary engages the article by Chi-Mao Wang, Damien Maye, and Michael Woods (2025) on ‘Planetary rural geographies’ through the vantage point of the city-state of Singapore. We argue that viewing the themes developed by Wang et al. from and through Singapore and other city-states brings out (geo)political frames – notably sovereignty, empires, and their aftermaths – with implications for other cases, sites, and the wider conceptual debate.
