Phraseology and phraseodidactics. Current status and future prospects
Marios Chrissou, Erla HallsteinsdóttirAbstract
Phraseodidactics is a transdisciplinary field of research that makes findings from research on phraseology directly applicable to language teaching. Since successful communication is largely based on pre-formed multi-word units (MWUs), also referred to as phrasemes, the systematic integration of phraseology into foreign language teaching is essential. This article discusses a selection of current research approaches in phraseology and phraseodidactics and outlines prospects for phraseodidactics. It shows that phraseodidactic issues are becoming increasingly interdisciplinary and more closely linked to general discussions on foreign language teaching, while also arguing that phraseodidactics can be understood as an integral part of a holistic approach to vocabulary teaching that permeates all areas of language teaching and learning.
