Photo‐Responsive Organic RTP of Benzothiophene Derivative

ABSTRACT

Photo‐responsive organic room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials show broad prospects in intelligent responsive RTP materials due to their advantages of environmental friendliness and facile availability. However, dynamic regulation of RTP by light remains challenging, as the introduction of photo‐responsive groups may lead to phosphorescence quenching. In this study, we designed and synthesized a photo‐responsive RTP molecule 9‐(1‐benzothiophen‐5‐carbonyl)‐9H‐carbazole (CZ‐CO‐BT), utilizing benzothiophene as the photo‐responsive unit and carbazole as the phosphorescent emitter. Under continuous UV irradiation, CZ‐CO‐BT exhibits weakening of both RTP intensity and lifetime through [2+2] cycloaddition reactions between molecules, achieving photo‐responsive triplet‐state luminescence regulation. Furthermore, by doping CZ‐CO‐BT into polymer matrix, a reversible phosphorescent switch is achieved through an oxygen‐consuming and oxygen‐introducing process under alternating UV light and heating treatment. Based on the unique photoswitching property of CZ‐CO‐BT, we explored the possibility of optical information storage, which demonstrated the great application potential of the molecule.
