Background:

Drakshaharitakyadi Leha is indicated for the management of Shwasa Roga by Yogaratnakar in the Shwasa Chikits a Adhyaya . Classically, this Churna is to be licked by mixing with honey and ghee. This classical Churna formulation was converted into Avaleha (DHL) form for better palatability and ease of dispensing, specifically in the pediatric age group. This modified formulation has reported significant clinical efficacy in clinical settings, but its quality parameters are not established yet. Hence, this study aimed to evaluate this DHL for its pharmacognostical, physico-chemical, and microbiological parameters.

Materials and Methods:

DHL was prepared at the Pharmacy, ITRA, Jamnagar, following classical reference of Avaleha Kalpna . The organoleptic and microscopic study was carried out at the pharmacognosy laboratory, ITRA, Jamnagar. Physico-chemical analyses were carried out at the Pharmaceutical Chemistry Lab, ITRA, Jamnagar. Gram’s stain and culture study was conducted at the Microbiological laboratory, ITRA, Jamnagar.

Results:

DHL was found to have a pungent bitter taste, Characteristic odor, and thick-semi solid consistency. DHL has 6.5 pH, 12.86% loss on drying, an Ash value of 1.60%, water-soluble extractive of 65.8%, methanol soluble extract of 60.51%, reducing sugar of 16.2%, nonreducing sugar of 32.8%, and total sugar of 49%. DHL was found to be microbiologically stable till a minimum of 238 days.

Conclusion:

As per this study, it can be concluded that Drakshaharitakyadi Leha in Avaleha form is palatable. Pharmacognosy, physico-chemical, and microbiological study parameters are found with this study are comparable with other Avaleha preparation.
