Persistent Transaminitis as the Initial Manifestation of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

Leema Pauline Cornelius, Neeraj Elango, Jered Livingston Kanagaraj

Abstract

Increased levels of serum transaminases occur in diseases of the liver, kidney, intestine, heart, and muscle. Transaminitis can be an initial manifestation of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) in boys. Knowledge of this fact would avoid extensive investigations to exclude an underlying liver disease. We describe a 3-year-old boy who had elevated liver enzymes found incidentally, who underwent extensive evaluation for persistently elevated transaminases, diagnosed with DMD on genetic testing.
