Persistence of Gastric Atrophy and Intestinal Metaplasia Six Months After H. pylori Treatment: A Retrospective Cohort Study

Hasan Açık, Kağan Gökçe
Objective: To assess the persistence and regression of gastric atrophy and intestinal metaplasia (IM) approximately six months after Helicobacter pylori treatment in patients undergoing repeat gastric biopsy. Methods: This single-center retrospective cohort included 70 patients with biopsy-confirmed H. pylori infection who received 14-day quadruple therapy and underwent follow-up endoscopy with biopsy approximately six months later. Histological findings were compared with baseline findings. Results: H. pylori was not detected on follow-up histology in 64/70 patients (91.4%). Among patients with baseline lesions, gastric atrophy persisted in 9/13 (69.2%) and IM in 19/21 (90.5%). No new atrophy (0/57) or IM (0/49) was identified among patients without the corresponding baseline lesion. Conclusion: Gastric atrophy and IM remained detectable in most patients with these baseline lesions at six months. Longer follow-up is required to assess regression and treatment effects.
