ABSTRACT

Background:

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) has anti-inflammatory properties and is indulged in the maintenance of the bulge region of the hair follicles

Aims:

The study aimed to assess the serum levels of PPARγ and its gene polymorphism in an Egyptian sample of patients with hirsutism

Subjects and Methods:

Using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay technique, serum levels of PPARγ were measured in 220 Egyptian women (100 hirsute and 120 apparently healthy females of matched age). PPARγ (Pro12Ala) gene polymorphism was studied using quantitative polymerase chain reaction technique

Results:

PPARγ (Pro12Ala) gene polymorphism was significantly less prominent in patients and associated with lower Ferriman–Gallwey scores (FGS) ( P < 0.001). It was also significantly less prominent in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) patients ( P = 0.0015). PPARγ serum levels in the hirsutism group were significantly decreased when compared to the control group ( P < 0.001). The PPARγ serum levels had a significant negative correlation with FGS

Conclusion:

The current results suggest that PPARγ gene polymorphism may have a role in the development of hirsutism even in cases not suffering from PCOS.
