Peripheral Intravenous Catheter-related Phlebitis in Adult Inpatients: A Point Prevalence Study in a Tertiary Care Hospital

Peripheral intravenous catheter (PIVC)-related phlebitis is a common complication of intravenous therapy characterized by vein inflammation, pain, localized swelling, erythema, and, in severe cases, infection or thrombophlebitis. Despite adherence to guidelines, phlebitis continues to occur with varying prevalence across different healthcare settings.
Aim
The aim was to assess the prevalence of PIVC-related phlebitis among patients admitted to a tertiary care hospital in India.
Materials and Methods
The study adopted a descriptive, cross-sectional survey research design among 101 adult patients with PIVCs in situ at a tertiary care hospital. Data were collected using a self-structured questionnaire and the standard Visual Infusion Phlebitis (VIP) Scale. Descriptive and bivariate inferential statistics were used for the analysis.
Findings
The point prevalence of active PIVC-related phlebitis (VIP score ≥1) was 42.6%, with the majority (69.8%) classified as Grade 1, indicating early signs of vein inflammation. Age, use of irritant medications, and frequency of intravenous medication administered were significantly associated with phlebitis (

The findings indicate a considerable prevalence of PIVC-related phlebitis, highlighting the need for regular assessment, adherence to evidence-based intravenous-catheter care protocols, and strengthening nursing surveillance, which can significantly reduce complications and improve patient outcomes.
