Performance of Indian Leather Industry during Post Reform Era

Output of leather industry grew by 10 per cent while output of entire industrial sector grew by 13 per cent during 1990-91 to 2023-24. Employment growth of leather industry grew by 4.35 per cent while employment growth of entire industrial sector remained 2.71 per cent which is less than the employment growth of leather industry. Productivity of labour increased and productivity of capital declined during post reform era. Manufacturing share of output, employment and profit of leather footwear increased and share of tanning of leather and finished leather declined in total leather output during post reform period
