Performance Evaluation Of RT-PPP, Network RTK, And PPP Techniques In Vehicle-Based Kinematic GNSS Positioning

Mert Gurturk
The need for real-time positioning is of critical importance, particularly for emerging technologies such as intelligent navigation and autonomous vehicles. Although the desired level of accuracy can be achieved in static positioning, the accuracy attainable in kinematic applications may vary considerably. In this study, real-time Precise Point Positioning (RT-PPP), CORS (Continuously Operating Reference Stations)-based Network RTK (Real-Time Kinematic), post-processed PPP (CSRS-PPP), and Post-Processed Kinematic (PPK) solutions were comparatively evaluated using kinematic data obtained from two dual-frequency geodetic Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers mounted on a land vehicle. The test was conducted on 22 April 2021 at Yıldız Technical University Davutpaşa Campus, with a 1 second sampling interval over an approximately 52-minute trajectory. The results showed that the post-processed CSRS-PPP solutions achieved horizontal RMS accuracies of 1.8 cm and 1.3 cm for the GR-5 and HiPer SR receivers, respectively. The Network RTK method provided a horizontal RMS accuracy of 4.5 cm for FIX epochs; however, the accuracy degraded considerably when non-FIX epochs were included. The RT-PPP solution remained at the decimeter level, with RMS errors of 16.7 cm in the horizontal component and 25.1 cm in three-dimensional positioning. The results indicate that RT-PPP is not sufficient for high-precision geodetic applications; however, it can serve as a practical real-time alternative for urban land-vehicle navigation.
