Background:

Despite India’s declaration as polio-free in 2014, poliomyelitis remains a global health concern. Therefore, in January 2023, a third dose of fractional inactivated polio vaccine (fIPV) was introduced into the National Immunization Schedule to improve immunity against circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus (cVDPV). This study aimed to assess and explore the perceptions and challenges among healthcare workers (HCWs) regarding the usage of the third dose of fIPV.

Materials and Methods:

A community-based mixed-method study was conducted among 100 HCWs. A cross-sectional study design was used for the quantitative study and analyzed using SPSS, while in-depth interviews were conducted to collect qualitative data.

Results:

Sixty-four percent of participants could correctly identify the full form of fIPV, 77% knew the recommended age for the third dose of fIPV, and 82% knew that the route was intradermal. Some HCWs were still confused about the need of third dose of fIPV, since India is already polio-free, even though most agreed it helps improve immunity. They raised concerns like giving too many vaccines, parents being hesitant, and fear of side effects. Interestingly, 40% said that parents often objected to giving IPV and oral polio vaccine together. The interviews also showed that many workers had not received formal training and were unsure about the exact reason for adding the third dose.

Conclusion:

This study underlines the urgent need for training and awareness among the HCWs on the importance of fIPV for preventing cVDPV.
