Abhijit Vhatkar, Vilis Pawar, Pravin ChavanThis case illustrates the revival of Campa Cola, an Indian-origin soft drink brand, by Reliance Industries Ltd through its subsidiary Reliance Consumer Products Limited. The Indian soft drink market had long been dominated by global players such as Coca-Cola and PepsiCo, creating a highly competitive duopoly industry structure. Reliance reintroduced Campa Cola by leveraging penetration pricing, an extensive retail and distribution network and nostalgia-based unique brand positioning targeted at Indian consumers. The relaunch drew comparisons with Reliance’s earlier market disruption strategy during the launch of Reliance Jio in the Indian telecom sector. The case highlighted the evolving dynamics of the Indian beverage market, including changing customer preferences, tough competition and future constraints. It also described the strategic challenges related to brand recall, pricing sustainability, expansion of distribution and competitive response. The case raised important strategic questions for the future direction of Campa Cola. Should Reliance aggressively expand Campa Cola across India to challenge the dominance of Coca-Cola and PepsiCo? Or should it pursue controlled expansion within its own retail and distribution ecosystem?
