Peer Navigation in HIV Prevention Programs for Transgender and Nonbinary Individuals: Qualitative Insights from a Community-Led Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Implementation Project

Purpose:

This study described client perceptions of successful attributes of peer navigators in a human immunodeficiency virus prevention program for transgender and nonbinary (TGNB) clients.

Methods:

A diverse sample of clients ( N = 25) participated in semistructured interviews between September 2023 and August 2024, evaluating a community-led program navigating clients along the pre-exposure prophylaxis continuum.

Results:

Participants identified four successful attributes: providing client-centered care , addressing broader social support needs , offering a flexible program , and building trust with community members .

Conclusion:

Findings underscore the importance of shared lived experience, program flexibility, and trust-building in peer-led interventions for TGNB individuals in community-based settings.
