‘ decomposition of genotypic variance for a single‐locus, n ‐ploid, m ‐allele, population under chromosomal segregation are obtained by generalizing an approach of L (a proof for L ‘s conjectured decomposition in the case m = 2 being given enroute). A decomposition of change in mean fitness from one generation to the next, of analogous kind, is also obtained; this is used to discount the primacy of the additive component of variance in change of mean fitness.
