Abstract

Introduction

The increasingly holistic approach to patient care aims to give patients a role as active participants in their own care. Especially because in chronic illness, treatment is largely carried out by the patient, with the healthcare team having less control over it.

Objectives

To co-construct a continuous self-care evaluation tool to guide adolescents living with type 1 diabetes toward resilience, preparing them to become autonomous adults.

Methods

The pilot study was a pre-experimental trial with pre- and post-tests and no control group. It was conducted with 23 adolescents/ families aged between 10 and 19 over eight months. The study made it possible to identify indicators of both self-care and resilience in the target population, which were used to co-construct the assessment tool. The validated tools used were the adapted Diabetes Self-Care Inventory for Adolescents by Nakamura (2019), the revised Self-Care Inventory scale by La Greca (2009), and the revised Resilience Factors Indicator by Bekaert (2012). All were organized following the dimensions of resilience according to Luthar and al. (2000). Data analysis was carried out using SPSS 20 software with the Student’s t-test and Multiple Correspondence Analysis method. All ethical considerations were respected, no limitations were recorded, and no conflict of interest was reported.

Results

The selected indicators were those with statistically significant association or that best contributed to both self-care and resilience. These include, better self-assessment of blood sugar and good quality and quantity dietary practices using local dishes (contribution: 7.36); Adjusting insuline dose based on blood glucose, diet and exercise (1.48, SD 0.79 to 2.65, SD 0.65; p < 0.0001); motivation and parental support (contribution: 5.88).

Conclusions

The cross-cultural tool, the Adolescent Self-Care and Resilience Assessment Questionnaire with 30-item will serve to continuously maximize the autonomy of young people/families to improve the quality of their adults life.
