Abstract

Introduction

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) in children is a major challenge in Burkina Faso.

Objectives

This study aims to evaluate the management of T1D at school, identifying barriers to safe care during school hours.

Methods

A cross-sectional study was conducted from June 10 to 30 September 2024, among 94 children, teenager and young adults with T1D enrolled in the Life for a Child program. A standardized questionnaire was administered by telephone. Data were analyzed using EPI-INFO and Excel (Chi² test, p<0.05).

Results

The average age of the children was 15.05 years. The diagnosis, made at an average age of 11.8 years, was often based on ketoacidosis (68.1%). Only 58.5% of children measured their blood glucose levels at school and 19.2% administered insulin there, with 71.1% returning home to do so. Blood glucose imbalance was noted in 42.6% of children. No school staff were trained in T1D. Multivariate analysis identified age (15-20 years) as a risk factor for imbalance (OR=5.13; 95% CI [1.1-23.2]).

Conclusions

School management of T1D is inadequate, characterized by low autonomy among children and a lack of resources and training in schools. Adolescence is a period of risk. There is an urgent need to formalize collaboration between schools, families, and health services, to train school staff, and to create suitable environments to ensure the schooling of children living with T1D in Burkina Faso.
