P-377: Impact of structured diabetes education on type 1 diabetes management: a study at Machakos level 5 diabetes clinic
P MutisyaAbstract
Introduction
Type 1 diabetes (T1D) management remains a significant challenge, particularly in pediatric populations. Structured diabetes education has been shown to improve glycemic control and quality of life in individuals with T1D.
Objectives
To assess the impact of structured diabetes education on glycemic control and treatment outcomes in children with T1D attending Machakos Level 5 Diabetes Clinic.
Methods
A randomized controlled trial was conducted at Machakos Level 5 Diabetes Clinic, involving 10 children with T1D on basal-bolus insulin therapy. Participants were selected at random and received structured diabetes education for six months. HbA1c levels were measured at baseline and after six months.
Results
At baseline, the average HbA1c level was 11.3%. After six months of structured diabetes education, the average HbA1c level significantly decreased to 8.3%, indicating improved glycemic control.
Conclusions
This study demonstrates the effectiveness of structured diabetes education in improving glycemic control and treatment outcomes in children with T1D. The results suggest that incorporating structured diabetes education into routine clinical practice can lead to better management of T1D and improved quality of life for pediatric patients. These findings have implications for the development of targeted interventions to support optimal T1D management in resource-limited settings.
