P-371: Tackling challenges in paediatric diabetes across a nation: a coordinated, collaborative approach
F Campbell, J FosterAbstract
Introduction
The Children and Young People’s (CYP) National Diabetes Network supports 35,801 CYP receiving care across England, Wales and Jersey in 172 paediatric diabetes units (PDUs). Over 15 years, the Network has contributed to improved outcomes and reduced variation; however, persistent challenges and inequities remain.
Objectives
A national delivery plan, co-developed with the 11 CYP diabetes networks and launched in 2020, set four five-year aims: (1) Standardised Care Processes, (2) Equitable Access to Diabetes Technology, (3) Workforce Development, and (4) Patient and Family Engagement.
Methods
Regional Network Managers led each priority area, with Network Chairs and members contributing through task-and-finish groups to address barriers, develop resources and drive implementation.
Results
Over five years, outputs included: a national DKA audit and training framework; a First Year of Care audit and standardised pathway; T1DE support guidelines; translated and digital diabetes technology resources (via DigiBete); two national online technology training events; three national Type 2 training events; a structured Type 2 peer-support network; a workforce calculator and standardised job descriptions; and a national family support training programme.
Conclusions
A coordinated national approach enabled implementation of new audits, guidelines, pathways and training across PDUs, supporting further standardisation of care and reduction of unwarranted variation. As priorities evolved and new challenges emerged, these learnings informed the next five-year plan (launching 2026), now focused on eight key areas: DKA Prevention and Education, Workforce, Optimising Technology, Teenage and Young Adult Care, Type 2 Diabetes, T1DE, Schools and Social Care, and Early-Stage Type 1.
