Introduction
Optimal management of type 1 diabetes requires a balanced diet in addition to daily insulin therapy. However, dietary habits vary by region, influenced by local customs, educational attainment and income.
Objectives
to describe the dietary practices of a cohort of children with type 1 diabetes managed within the CDIC programme in Guinea.
Methods
We conducted a descriptive cross-sectional study among patients with type 1 diabetes being treated at the Kankan and Nzérékoré Diabetes clinics (Guinea). Data were collected through individual interviews with the children or their parents/guardians using a questionnaire on dietary habits
Results
A total of 86 patients aged 18 ± 5 years, with a sex ratio of 1:1, were interviewed. The average duration of diabetes was 3.5 years. The majority of patients lived in urban areas (62.2%) and had a secondary or higher level of education (59%). The dietary analysis revealed that 84% of patients ate three meals a day, 30.49% had snacks, and 23% reported snacking. Among them, 80% of children or parents were aware of dietary recommendations, and 72% reported difficulties in following them due to a lack of financial resources.
Conclusions
Diet is a key factor in the management of type 1 diabetes. However, despite a fairly satisfactory level of knowledge, following nutritional recommendations remains a challenge and requires improved access to a balanced diet.
