Introduction
Type 2 Diabetes (T2DM) has attracted a growing public health concern among adolescents in Nigeria and globally, a consequence of the adoption of an unhealthy lifestyle and the hormonal influence of puberty. Early identification and prevention of the at-risk population can ameliorate the progression to type 2 diabetes T2DM through screening programs
Objectives
Determination of the Influence of diabetic education (DE) and Reinforcement Strategies on Glycaemic Control among Adolescents aged 10-18 years in Sokoto, Nigeria
Methods
It was a pre and post-experimental study involving an intervention (Int) and control (C) groups of participants proportionately selected through a multistage systematic random sampling. Knowledge on diabetes and lifestyle practices was collected using an adopted DM educational tool (Dorosteh instrument-ADAT), and knowledge scores and serial HbA1C results were used as outcome measures. Data were analyzed using the IBM SPSS version 26, descriptive and inferential (McNeman’s) statistics were employed to compare the pre and post intervention results between the 2 groups, and regression analysis was used to predict outcomes. Significant levels were set at p=0.05
Results
The Prevalence of prediabetes at pre and post interventions was 18.1% and 15.6% (p=0.001), for Int group. While, for the control 20.6% and 19.4% (0.250). The knowledge score on awareness at pre-interventions were 38.8% and 38.7% (p=0.988) for Int &C group respectively, which rose at post-intervention to 92.9% and 63.5% (p= 0.001), respectively. Healthy practices improved from 14.1% to 50.0%, (p=0.001) for Int, and 12.9 to 31.4%, (0.012) for C. The logistic regression analysis showed socioeconomic class, family history of diabetes and overweight are independent predictors of T2DM, with statistical significance
Conclusions
Healthy interventions is effective at improving diabetes awareness and promotion of a healthy lifestyle among adolescent. Practices can be improved with availability of resources and environmental support.
