P-287: Empowering communities for early detection of diabetes: a strategic advocacy and media-based approach in Tanzania

S Moshy

Abstract

Introduction

Early detection of diabetes is a critical public health priority, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where a large proportion of cases remain undiagnosed until complications arise. In Tanzania, the increasing prevalence of diabetes, combined with limited awareness of early symptoms and risk factors, contributes to delayed diagnosis and poor health outcomes. TDA implemented a nationwide advocacy and education initiative aimed at improving early detection through strategic use of mass media and community engagement.

Objectives

The initiative aimed to increase public awareness of early signs, symptoms, and risk factors of diabetes and build capacity among media professionals to deliver accurate and consistent diabetes education.

Methods

A national multi-platform campaign was implemented using radio, television, newspapers, and social media. Healthcare professionals delivered 106 radio and 72 television programs focusing on early detection, symptoms, and prevention. Capacity building was conducted for 104 radio and 62 television broadcasters and 21 newspaper editors. Standardized educational materials approved by the Ministry of Health were distributed. Reach and community responses were monitored using media coverage data and reported behavioral changes.

Results

The campaign reached millions of Tanzanians through mass media. Approximately 2 million individuals were reached via television and over 600,000 through print media. More than 3 million people reported adopting preventive behaviors, including voluntary screening, improved diet, and increased physical activity. Trained media professionals continued disseminating diabetes education, increasing sustainability and reinforcing early detection messages.

Conclusions

Media-based advocacy is an effective strategy for improving early detection of diabetes in children and adolescents in resource-limited settings. Strengthening partnerships with media and health sectors enhances awareness, promotes screening, and supports sustainable community engagement.
