P-283: Awareness and prevention of type 1 and type 2 diabetic complications among patients in asokoro district hospital, Abuja
T BelloAbstract
Introduction
Diabetes mellitus (Type 1 and Type 2) poses a significant global health burden, with complications contributing heavily to morbidity and mortality. In Nigeria, understanding patient awareness is vital to reducing these outcomes. This study assesses the level of awareness and the utilization of preventive measures among patients in an urban hospital setting in Abuja.
Objectives
The primary objectives of this study were to:
Methods
A descriptive research design was employed using random sampling at Asokoro District Hospital. Fifty-two (52) questionnaires were distributed across various wards. Forty-eight (48) valid responses (92% completion rate) were included in the final analysis. Data were analyzed using frequency distribution tables, simple percentages, and mean scores to determine aggregate knowledge levels.
Results
The findings indicate a high level of awareness regarding perceived diabetic complications among respondents. Patients also demonstrated a good knowledge of preventive measures. The statistical analysis yielded aggregate scores of 1.6 for awareness and 1.7 for knowledge of prevention, suggesting a strong baseline understanding of the condition among the sampled population.
Conclusions
While awareness levels are good, prioritizing continuous patient education and healthy lifestyle promotion remains crucial. To further mitigate the burden of diabetes, healthcare initiatives should move toward community-based interventions and policy changes that address systemic barriers to optimal management and the prevention of associated complications.
