Introduction
T1D is increasing among children and adolescents and is associated with a higher risk of infections. Immunization is an essential strategy for health protection.
Objectives
To assess vaccination coverage among pediatric patients with T1D followed in an outpatient clinic of a tertiary hospital and identify factors associated with incomplete immunization schedules.
Methods
Cross-sectional study of patients aged 0-18 years with T1D at a reference center in Brazil, evaluating clinical, epidemiological, and laboratory data, family income, and vaccination status in accordance with the National Immunization Program (PNI) and the Reference Centers for Special Immunobiologicals (CRIE) recommendations.
Results
A total of 55 patients were analyzed, 52% female; mean age 11.3 years. They had an average of 5 medical visits per year. Regarding socioeconomic status, 52% of mothers had completed high school, and 41% of families had incomes between 1 and 3 times the minimum wage. Overall, 61.8% had up-to-date vaccinations. Of those with delayed vaccination, 42.8% were delayed only because they had not received the COVID-19 vaccine. Group comparison showed no significant differences in age (p=0.465) or number of visits (p=0.101); however, the delayed group had a higher rate of missed appointments (p=0.036). No significant association was found related to family income (p=0.737) or maternal education (p=0.228). Only 7.3% were aware of T1D-specific vaccines, and just 3.6% had received them at CRIE.
Conclusions
Low vaccination rates were seen among patients with T1D. Delays in vaccination are mainly due to COVID-19 vaccines and are linked to more missed appointments. Awareness and use of specialized vaccines were very limited. These results emphasize the importance of developing strategies to increase vaccination coverage in this group.
