Abstract

This book emerges from the American Political Science Association’s 2021 Presidential Task Force, which examines the state of methodology in political science with a central focus on engaged pluralism. It shows how methodological choices shape every research project and establishes epistemological reflection at the core of disciplinary development. The book addresses debates across quantitative methods and qualitative methods while engaging with new data, critical perspectives, and a host of substantive questions. It highlights the pluralistic character of the discipline as a distinct strength, illustrated through varied approaches, backgrounds, and perspectives. Finally, the book positions engaged methodology as an essential framework for uniting the field and advancing inclusive, rigorous, and innovative political science research.
