Ownership Democratization in Economic Planning Debates: Socialization Strategies for Postcapitalist Transitions

Gerard Serralabós

ABSTRACT

This article links the revival of democratic economic planning to a growing focus on the democratization of ownership in order to examine institutional strategies for postcapitalist transitions. It reviews the democratic planning literature by showing how transition often remains unexamined, as the socialization of the means of production is frequently assumed rather than critically specified. To address this gap, the article revisits Klaus Novy's typology of socialization strategies as an analytical framework for situating heterogeneous calls to democratize ownership within sector‐specific, strategic, and historically grounded pathways of structural transformation. By foregrounding contemporary socialization strategies across finance, labor, and land, and briefly applying this analytical lens to the Chilean democratic transition to socialism (1970–1973), it argues for a more historically attentive and institutionally pluralist approach to transition, better equipped to confront the dilemmas shaping democratically planned postcapitalist futures.
