Our Audacity of Hope: From Passive Platitudes to Courageous Collective Action in Defense of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Abstract

In this increasingly hostile political climate, the authors acknowledge and share the despair and hopelessness felt by so many in the face of the recent overwhelming anti-DEI rhetoric and political posturing. While recognizing this shared emotional reaction to such pushback, the authors argue that scholars and practitioners must harness the transformative power of audacious hope and moral anger to sustain collective action and commitment to social justice and equity. The hope described in this chapter is not blind optimism; rather, this audacious hope serves as a catalyzing force, fueled by courage and persistence despite overwhelming opposition. The authors combine the concepts of hope and moral anger with historical precedents from the Civil Rights Movement to demonstrate how these complementary emotions function as “moral batteries” that drive systemic change against formidable resistance. Drawing on examples of Civil Rights leaders who channeled these emotions effectively, the authors encourage DEI scholars, practitioners, and organizational leaders to embrace this emotional duality as both weapon and shield in defending decades of progress toward DEI goals.
