Origami-Paper Microfluidics for Point-of-Need Analysis

Abstract

Point-of-care (POC) diagnostics has attracted increasing attention in biomedical research. However, it remains challenging in low resources setting. Origami-paper microfluidics has emerged as a promising approach for point-of-need (PON) analysis by leveraging the advantages of paper, including low cost, zero power, easy to access, biodegradability, and capillary-driven fluid transport. These features enable the development of PON platforms suitable for resource-limited environments without centralized instrumentation and trained personnel. This perspective highlights recent advances in origami-paper microfluidics for target detection using colorimetric, electrochemical, fluorescence, and lateral flow assays (LFAs). Origami-paper microfluidics offers a powerful platform for addressing challenges in PON diagnostics, with significant potential for rapid diagnostics and environmental surveillance in low resource settings.
