Ordered growth of PTCDA molecules on a rare-earth modified Si(111) surface

Yi Lu, Milan Kubicki, Martin Franz, Mario Dähne

The growth of 3,4,9,10 perylene tetracarboxylic dianhydride molecules on terbium-modified Si(111) surfaces was studied using scanning tunneling microscopy and low-energy electron diffraction. On the TbSi2/Si(111) monolayer substrate, an ordered growth with a herringbone structure was observed, forming three rotational domains with the herringbone chains oriented along the ⟨112¯⟩ directions. The structure was found to be commensurate with a rectangular 23×5 unit cell containing two molecules. On the Tb3Si5/Si(111) bilayer substrate, in contrast, no ordered growth was found.
