Optimizing Physical and Psychological Health in Musicians

Dianna Kenny, Bronwen Ackerman

Abstract

This chapter explores the complex physical and psychological aspects of music performance, whereby musicians aspire to produce sounds of the highest quality at the limits of their mental and physical capacity. Understanding common risk factors to which musicians are exposed is essential to optimize performance and prevent performance-related physical and mental-health issues. We hope to equip musicians with the knowledge, skills, and professional healthcare to develop and maintain bodies and minds in optimal condition with an appropriate mix of prevention, treatment, recovery, music-practice strategies, cross-training, and overall healthy lifestyle. (Psycho)educational initiatives enhance the health literacy of musicians, which increases performer resilience, self-efficacy, and enjoyment, and reduces PRMD and music performance anxiety sufficient to sustain long and healthy musical careers.
