Optimizing Health and Practice in Central New York Dentistry: A Study of Ergonomic and Wellness Practices and Readiness for Change

Ahmed Radwan, Timothy R Abraham, David T Schilling

This pilot study examined musculoskeletal symptoms, ergonomic practices, and wellness behaviors among dental professionals in Central New York. Eighteen participants completed the Ergonomics, Physical Activity, and Wellness Survey for Dental Professionals (EPAWS‑DP). Results revealed high rates of work‑related musculoskeletal discomfort, limited adherence to ergonomic best practices, and variable wellness behaviors across dental roles. Assistants and hygienists demonstrated greater readiness for ergonomic change than dentists, despite reporting less access to ergonomic equipment. Several correlations linked musculoskeletal symptoms with suboptimal posture and insufficient stretch breaks. Findings highlight the need for integrated ergonomic and wellness interventions tailored to specific dental professions.
