Optimal deployment of wireless charging infrastructure at signalized intersections under consideration of power limits

İlyas Cihan Aksoy
Despite the increasing popularity of electric vehicles in recent years, their limited driving range necessitate frequent charging, thereby slowing their adoption speed worldwide. The wireless charging strategy enables charging-while-driving, eliminating recharging downtime. By exploiting waiting times in front of traffic lights at signalized intersections for recharging electric vehicles, this study addresses the optimal design of wireless charging infrastructure at a signalized intersection for the maximization of the total recharged energy throughout the entire analysis period and the minimization of the investment cost, under the consideration of the power limit. The developed optimization model based on the Genetic Algorithm is applied to a four-arm signalized intersection, which is generated hypothetically, for an analysis period of 18 hours. Results justify the performance of the developed optimization model and clearly underscore the importance of incorporating the power limit into the problem formulation.
