Operationalizing a library makerspace in Nigeria: lessons from the University of Lagos library

This study aims to investigate the transition of makerspaces from concept to practice within Nigerian academic libraries, using the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Library Makerspace as a case study. It examines the emergence and operationalization of the makerspace, the facilities and services available, patterns of utilization, perceived benefits and challenges affecting its sustainability. The study addresses a significant gap in the literature, which has largely focused on awareness, advocacy and preparedness for makerspace adoption rather than the experiences of operational makerspaces.
Design/methodology/approach
An exploratory qualitative case study design was adopted. Data were collected through direct observation of the makerspace environment and activities, document analysis of institutional reports, website content and promotional materials, as well as semi-structured interviews with librarians responsible for managing the facility. The collected data were analyzed thematically to identify key patterns relating to the implementation, use and sustainability of the makerspace.
Findings
The findings reveal that the UNILAG Library Makerspace has successfully evolved from an institutional vision into a functional innovation and learning hub. The facility provides access to specialized software, collaborative learning spaces and technology-enabled resources that support teaching, research, digital literacy, creativity and student engagement. The study also found that the makerspace has contributed to repositioning the academic library as an active environment for knowledge creation. However, sustainability concerns relating to funding, technological upgrades, staff capacity development and maintenance remain important challenges.
Research limitations/implications
The study provides empirical evidence on the practical implementation and use of makerspaces within a Nigerian academic library context. It demonstrates the potential of makerspaces to enhance library relevance and support innovation-oriented services while highlighting the institutional conditions necessary for long-term sustainability.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is among the first studies to investigate an operational makerspace in a Nigerian university library. This study contributes original evidence on how makerspaces function in practice and provides important data for academic libraries seeking to establish or strengthen similar initiatives.
