Open-Source Digital Repositories and Preservation Systems for Digital Preservation: A Comparative Study
Ouafae El-Kasri, Bouchra El IdrissiAbstract
This study presents a comparative analysis of open-source digital repositories and preservation systems used in digital preservation workflows. As long-term digital preservation becomes increasingly essential due to rapid technological changes, this research examines five widely adopted systems and repositories: Archivematica, DSpace, RODA, LOCKSS, and Fedora Repository. The analysis focuses on their alignment with the Open Archival Information System (OAIS) reference model, specifically in terms of the functional model, informational model, mandatory responsibilities, and terminology. Additionally, the study evaluates their essential features, strengths, and weaknesses. The results demonstrate that none of the selected systems and repositories are fully aligned with the OAIS model. The findings also provide valuable guidance for identifying appropriate systems and repositories for effective long-term digital preservation.
