On Vitrimer Coatings and Adhesives: Chemistry, Utilization, and Perspectives
Huixing Cao, Katrien V. BernaertsVitrimer resins, created through dynamically crosslinked covalent linkages that form a permanent network, exhibit durability, chemical resistance, reprocessing, and recycling properties, bridging the gap between conventional thermoplastics and thermosets. Consequently, they are ideal candidates for sustainable next-generation polymers used in coating and adhesive applications. In this chapter, we provide a comprehensive review and perspective of the study, progress, and advanced features of vitrimer resins for these applications. The basic chemistry of vitrimers, specifically associative reversible bonds, is first summarized; then, their emerging advantages in terms of self-healing, fabrication, functionality and stimuli-responsive properties are discussed. The final part of this chapter addresses current challenges and perspectives for future applications. This chapter will provide an essential basic introduction for the development of promising vitrimer coatings and adhesives.
