Olympic Games Legacy

Becca Leopkey

Summary

The concept of Olympic Games legacy is commonly understood to be tangible and intangible, planned and unplanned long-term structural changes, such as a boost in tourism, creation or renovation of sport and urban infrastructure, and generation of event hosting experience during and following the hosting of the event. The emergence and evolution of event legacy in the Olympic Movement include shifts driven by implementation of the International Olympic Committee’s Agenda 2020, Agenda 2020 + 5, and the New Norm. Existing Olympic legacy scholarship covers decades of Olympic Games, including numerous aspects of legacy beyond mere economic and infrastructural, including environmental, behavioral, policy, and others, as well as regional and event differences. Research also covers related events linked to the Olympic Movement in general, such as Youth Olympic Games and Paralympic Games legacy. The status of Olympic legacy and its prognosis remain key areas of scholarship with exciting future avenues of research.
